

Dorothy Lee Layne Arthur, 88, of Lynchburg, VA, died, Saturday, December 31, 2011, at The Summit. She was the wife of the late Lewis Abner Arthur. Born August 16, 1923, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Franklin Davis Layne and the late Carrie DeEtte Dunn Layne.
Mrs. Arthur was a retired office manager for Associated Transport and a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church. Mrs. Arthur loved needlepoint, gardening, woman’s club activities and travel. She also did volunteer work at the Cancer Office for many years and she also volunteered as coordinator for the Rivermont Senior Center. Mrs. Arthur was also a member of the Business and Professional Woman’s Club and the Suburban Woman’s Club.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Arthur is preceded in death by one brother, James Franklin Layne.
Mrs. Arthur is survived by two sons, Wayne Lee Arthur and his wife Kay of Forest and Dr. Lewis A. Arthur and his wife Judy of Lynchburg; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Layne Arthur and Joleen Stewart of Olney, MD and Alice Montague Arthur Townsend and her husband Dr. Mark Townsend of Lynchburg; four great-grandchildren, Virginia Grace Townsend, Anne Columbia Townsend, Margaret Hope Townsend and David West Townsend; and one nephew, James Lee Layne of Lynchburg
A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 6, 2012, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Burger officiating. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery, and the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society or the Free Clinic of Central Virginia.
