Obituary of Elizabeth "Betty" Baer Lewis
Elizabeth (Betty) Baer Lewis died peacefully on Christmas Eve at Westminster Canterbury, Lynchburg, Virginia. She was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts May 23, 1925 and lived in Virginia most of her adult life. Betty lived life to the fullest with a renewed energy for each day and an eye toward the future. She was the ultimate communicator, with a passion for maintaining significant lifelong relationships and promoting changes she envisioned in her world. She was a dedicated member of the Episcopal Church. Her sharp and thoughtful mind loved literature, the arts, and current events. She thoroughly enjoyed sailing and being on the water, traveling the world, especially with Washington and Lee’s Alumni Travel Program, and anything French. Betty was devoted to her husband, Dan, who died in 1987. They met and were married in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1948. As a young couple, they moved to Lexington, VA before moving to Lynchburg in 1954. In 1963, Dan’s career moved the family to West Point, VA. Upon his retirement in 1983, Dan and Betty moved to Williamsburg, VA until she returned to Lynchburg in 2016. Betty actively campaigned for many causes throughout her life. Whether it was the League of Women Voters, the West Point Teen Club, the Muscarelle Museum of Art, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation or many other worthy causes, she put her energies and talents to work. In her final years, she continued her passion for writing as a founding Co-editor of The Recorder, a publication reflecting the lives and thoughts of Westminster Canterbury residents Family and friends were extremely important to her. She thoroughly enjoyed planning family vacations and reunions to create precious memories for all. Betty is survived by her three sons and their families: Larry and Cindy Lewis of Dubois, Wyoming, Cliff and Leslie Lewis of Lewisville, North Carolina and Rob and Cathy Lewis of Corvallis, Oregon. Grandchildren include Katie Caplan (Dan), Daniel Lewis, Logan Lewis, Amy Rounds (Phil), and Jim Lewis. Great Grandchildren: Henry and Oliver Caplan. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel C Lewis Jr, brother Bruce L Baer, and parents Herbert and Betty Baer. A memorial service will be planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to the following: the Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg, the Muscarelle Museum of Art in Williamsburg and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Condolences may be sent to Whitten Funeral Home either online or at 7404 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502
