

Born on June 14, 1940 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Emmett Rudell Staton and Margaret B. Staton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy Delton Carwile and her second husband, Dewey Lee Johns. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert C. Staton and sisters, Peggy S. Henderson and Jean Mayberry and her step-mother, Ellen C. Staton.
Throughout her life, Elsie worked hard to provide for her daughters having raised them by herself. She worked at GE, Lynchburg Foundry and Lynchburg City Nursing Home prior to her retirement. She loved her family and was extremely close to her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved playing BINGO, cards and board games with her friends at the McGurk House who became like her family. She enjoyed listening to gospel music, watching bowling and game shows. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her daughters, Pam Grigg (Milton), Angela Hall (Steve) and Tammy Johnson (Tim); grandchildren, Matthew Hall, Jessica Grigg, James Grigg, Taylor Cooke and Tyler Johnson; great grandchildren; Karmen Hall, Wren Cooke and Quinlen Johnson; and sisters, Barbara S. Carrico, Virginia Dalton, Donna Smith; and brothers, Jimmy Cyrus, Clyde Staton and Dennis Staton.
The family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice for their care and compassion during her final days.
A graveside service celebrating her life will be conducted on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Fort Hill Memorial Park with Pastor Dwayne Martin officiating. Friends are welcome to pay their respects and sign the register book on Monday, May 27, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
