Evelyn Smith Merkey

Born January 10, 1937 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late William Walter and Madeline Lipscomb Smith and was also preceded in death by a sister, Lois Murphy Foster and three brothers, Calvin, Malcolm, and Ronald Smith. Mrs. Merkey worked at Craddock & Terry Shoe Corporation and retired from Dental Laboratory Services.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Cindy Foster Stephenson and husband, Charles and Katrina Foster Funk Jones and husband, Sam, both of Gladys, Donna Lynne Foster Wheeley and husband, Larry of Burlington, NC; four step children, Kathy Merkey of Charlottesville, Keith Merkey and his partner, Bill of Baltimore, MD, Karen Merkey Gallupe of Lynchburg, and Kevin Merkey of Bedford; seven grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Garland Smith of Lynchburg, and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel conducted by the Rev. Wayne Hudson. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the funeral home.
