

George “Sonny” Onyx Arthur, Jr. (also known as “Poppa” by his children and grandchildren), 81, of Lynchburg passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017, at his residence of his daughter. He was the husband of Betty Clowdis Arthur. Born September 25, 1935, in Richmond, he was the son of the late George Onyx Arthur, Sr. and the late Fay Coleman Arthur.
George was a retired school bus driver for Lynchburg City Schools, and was the previous owner of Arthur’s Industrial Maintenance. He was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, where he enjoyed driving the church bus for over 40 years. George loved fishing and was an avid racecar driver and fan. He also served our country in the U.S. Marine Corps.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Cathy Boling.
In addition to his wife, George is survived by three daughters, Ellen Arthur Boling (Bob) of Rustburg, Deborah Arthur White (Robert) of Goode and Vickie Arthur Claybaugh (Scott) of Lynchburg; twelve grandchildren, Daniel Boling (Kori), Natalie Boling, Amanda Boling, Neil White, Evelyn Claybaugh, Eleanor Claybaugh, Eric Claybaugh, Ethan Claybaugh, Eli Claybaugh, Emma Claybaugh and Everette Claybaugh; eight great grandchildren; and other numerous friends and church family.
A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with the Rev. David Heerpsink officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
