Obituary of Hazel Mason
On Sunday, October 18, 2020, Mrs. Hazel Jacklin Mason, age 95, was released from the bondages of Alzheimer’s, her soul free to walk hand in hand with her late husband Joel V. Mason. Hazel was born to the late Emily and George Henry Jacklin in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England on August 11, 1925. Hazel was one of three siblings, her late brother Ken, and her late sister Barbara. As a young girl during WWII, Hazel road her bike to and from work, even during many of the bombing raids. During WWII, at the young age of 19, she met and married Joel, an American soldier. After the war’s end, she courageously came to the United States on a ship filled with other war brides. Not one to be a farmer’s wife in Texas, her husband re-enlisted in the United States Army, where they served their country for 30 years. Raising 3 children, who to this day, have fond memories of living as Army Brats, moving from Texas to Maryland, to Germany, to Texas again, to Germany again, to Indiana to Virginia and finally to Georgia, where they retired. During the times Joel served in Korea and Vietnam, Hazel reared her children until his return. Along the way, the family met and maintained lifelong friendships. Hazel will be remembered as a dear friend, an independent spirit, the lover of all things British, always standing when she heard “God Save the Queen”, even on TV, a wicked sense of humor, a lover of music and dancing, her Christmas chocolate log cake, her excitement for Christmas, and a devoted mother and wife who loved nothing more than to have her children and grandchildren come to visit. Together, Joel and Hazel reared 3 children: Ken (Barbara), Georgia (Al), and David (Debbie). Royce Fleming, Hazel’s caregiver for the last 6 years is considered another daughter. The family was blessed to have her as a companion/caregiver for their mother, who was always at peace when she was present. They have 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Due to Covid-19 a local funeral service will not be scheduled. A graveside service will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at Arlington National Cemetery, where she will be interred with her late husband Joel. Services will be live streamed at www.facebook.com/whittenfuneralhome Thank you to Nicole, Taylor, Anita, Happy, Hannah, Tiara, Carey, and Mona for your professionalism and care. The love you showed our mother did not go unnoticed. The family requests that any memorials be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, 355 Rio Road West, Suite 102, Charlottesville, VA 22901
