Born on November 5, 1924, in Campbell County, he was the son of the late DeWitt T. and Sallie Rosser Litchford and was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Arthur Litchford and William Husie Litchford and two sisters, Nancy L. Totty and Wilmouth L. Scott. Mr. Litchford was retired from Watts Petroleum with 44 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was wounded in Germany and received The Purple Heart and The Silver Star for bravery.
Mr. Litchford was a member of New Chapel Baptist Church, where he was a past Deacon, Treasurer for 40 years, Trustee, and also served on numerous committees. He was also a member of the Rustburg Ruritan Club, where he served as past Treasurer and Vice President and American Legion Post16.
He was a farmer and Jack of all Trades and was always willing to help anyone in need. Mr. Litchford was a quiet man, led by example, and never said a bad word about anyone. He was a good father, grandfather, and “Big Pa” to Angela, Hannah, Jacob, and Randy.
Over the years, Mr. Litchford was a supporter of New Chapel Baptist Church, St. Jude’s, the American Heart Assoc., the American Cancer Society, Wounded Warriors, Feed the Children, and Law Enforcement.
Mr. Litchford is survived by his son, John D. Litchford; granddaughter, Angela L. Owens and husband, Randy; great-grandchildren, Hannah N. Owens and Jacob W. Owens; sister, Edith L. Cyrus; sister-in-law, Annie C. “Sis” Morris and husband, James, and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 16, 2021, at New Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in Rustburg, with The Rev. Tim Dooley and The Rev. Phillip Bailey officiating.
