

Herman P. Garbee, 85, of Lynchburg passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2016, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Burgess Garbee for 59 years. Born May 15, 1931, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Albert James Garbee and the late Irene Price Garbee.
Herman was a graduate of Brookville High School and Lynchburg College. He also did graduate studies at UVA, and received a M.Ed. at Lynchburg College. Herman’s teaching career included six years teaching at Huddleston High School in Bedford County, two years teaching at Brookville High School in Campbell County and seventeen years in administration as Assistant Principal at Brookville. Herman was a long time and devoted member of Marsh Memorial United Methodist Church. Herman had a lifelong love of farming, as he was an active farmer in Campbell County. He was a devoted baseball player, coach and fan. His favorite teams were Baltimore and Washington. Herman and his family cherished annual family trips to the beach. He was also a member of Lyn-Dan Heights Ruritan Club, serving twenty-five years and was Ruritan of the year on more than one occasion. Herman was also recognized by the Masons for his outstanding contribution to his community.
In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Eden Barbee and Rebecca Garbee Henderson.
In addition to his wife, Herman is survived by his son, Albert Thomas Garbee and his wife Amanda Lea of Rustburg; three grandsons, Conner Lee Garbee, Caleb Thomas Garbee and Cayden Allen Garbee; special cousin, Connie Coleman of Lynchburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 17, 2016, Marsh Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Burleigh officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Friday, September 16, 2016, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the residence.
