

Howard Ooten, 100, of Evington, passed away, Wednesday, January 08, 2014, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Kathleen Ashwell Ooten. Born August 6, 1913, in Myrtle, WV, he was the son of the late William Ooten and the late Alie Fair Nelson Ooten.
Howard was a retired coal miner and he was of the Presbyterian faith. Howard was a member of the DAV and the United Mine Workers Association. Howard also served our country in the US Army during World War II. He was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
In addition to his wife and parents, Howard was preceded in death by his two sons, William Thomas Ooten and Aubrey Lewis Ooten; and numerous brothers and sisters.
Howard is survived by his daughter-in-law, Sandra Abbott Ooten of Evington; two grandchildren, Mark Lewis Ooten (Kelly Lyn) of Charlottesville and Mary Kathleen Ooten of Evington; and two great-grandchildren, Logan McCauley Ooten and Lelia Katherine Ooten.
A graveside service will be conducted, 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 11, 2014, at Altavista Memorial Park, where Military Honors will be presented by the American Legion Post 16.
The family will receive friends, 6-7 p.m., Friday, January 10, 2014, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
