

Born June 6, 1922 at Variety Mills in Nelson County,VA to the late Beverly W. and Rose Stinnett Harlow, he was the loving and devoted husband of Mary Mae Ponton Harlow for sixty-seven years.
Mr. Harlow was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and was one of five brothers who served honorably in World War II. He attained the rank of Tech/Sgt in the 44th Service Group of the Air Corps and was an airplane and engine mechanic . His service was in China-Burma-India. He remarked that he was one of a few who got a trip around the world in service. He was awarded the following honors of distinction: Bronze Star, American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. He enjoyed sharing stories of his service and contribution to world peace. He was a member of American Legion Post #16 and the Withers Hughes Post of the Veterans of Foreign War.
In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by his son, B. Michael Harlow; a sister, Mabel H. Pendleton; eight brothers, Thomas W. Harlow, Robert B. Harlow, William E. Harlow, George M. Harlow, Carrington C. Harlow, Joseph M. Harlow, Lewis E. Harlow and Clinton B. Harlow.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his grandchildren, Jason Michael Harlow of Boston, MA and Abbey Drake Harlow of East Boston, MA; his daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Harlow of Wallingford, VT; sisters-in-law, Dorothy C. Harlow of Arrington, VA; Dorothy W. Harlow of Lake Placid, FL, and Nancy E. Harlow of Brooksville, FL; and a number of nieces and nephews.
His faith journey began at Fairmount Baptist Church in Shipman, VA and continued later in life when he became a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a deacon for 40years. He was retired from McLean Trucking with thirty years of service and was a member of the Teamsters Union.
Mr. Harlow had a deep love for his roots in Nelson County. While one of his favorite past times was fishing, he especially enjoyed fishing in the soapstone quarries on his family farm in Nelson County. His great love for sharing laughter also had its roots there
He had a deep and abiding love for family and friends and never allowed a stranger to remain a stranger. Through the years Mr. & Mrs. Harlow opened their hearts and home to students at Liberty University who considered them to be their parents while they were away from home.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff on 2 North of the General Medical Unit at Lynchburg General Hospital for their excellent attention to Mr. Harlow and his family.
A funeral service will be held at Whitten Timberlake Chapel at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 15, 2013, with the Revs. C. Randall Harlow, David Heerspink & John Campbell officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park with military honors accorded by American Legion Post # 16. The family will receive friends from 7to 8:00 PM at Whitten Timberlake Chapel on Wednesday, Aug. 14 and at other times at the residence.
