James Simon Bumgarner

October 26, 1925March 17, 2020

James Simon Bumgarner, born on October 26, 1925 and passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 202, grew up during the depression. He was the 7th of 10 children of Christopher and Rebecca Bumgarner and dropped out of school to join the Navy the day before his 18th birthday. He served honorably on an LST in the Pacific until the close of WWII, the end of his contract, traveling as far as China and Japan. He returned and attended machinist school working in Lynchburg and Newport News before ending his career at Modern Machine and Tool Company, after 30 years. After retirement he and his wife, Marilyn returned to his hometown of Lynchburg where he faithfully attended Heritage Baptist Church. In 2001, he felt the call to missions, serving 4 ½ years in an orphanage in Uganda, East Africa, where he acted as mechanic, farm director, SS teacher, preacher, and evangelist. He loved his Savior and never tired of telling others about Jesus. The theme of his life was salvation by grace through faith.

James is survived by his wife, Marilyn Frances Bumgarner; children, Betty Wilkins and husband Gordon, Linda Ebert and husband Hugh, Kenneth Bumgarner and wife Patty, Cynthia Campbell, and Sheree Yoder; step-sons, Don Guthrie and wife Betsy, Richard Guthrie and wife Tina, and David Guthrie and wife Jennifer; 21 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; brother, Abner Bumgarner; and number other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Rex Bumgarner, his parents, and 8 siblings.

A private graveside service will be held at Virginia Memorial Park with Dr. F. Gerald Kroll officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Teen Missions, C/O Heritage Baptist Church, 219 Breezewood Dr., Lynchburg, Virginia 24502.

Mom (Miriam) was uncle James' nanny at the time he served the LORD here in Uganda. He was such a kind man to her and to us as a family. He shared lots of Bible activities, evangelism, church, farm with us. Uncle James and Marilyn gave us Bibles in 2001, this has always rekindled our moments together whenever I open it. Rom 10:9 was our theme verse whenever we went for evangelism in the villages. For I am more than convinced that James is in comfort with Jesus (Rom 10:11). I celebrate you uncle and I look forward to meeting you in eternal glory someday

To you all,
We want you to know we are thinking of each one of you during this time. I love the picture you have chosen to post, Mr. Bumgarner with that smile and twinkle in his eye. To Kenny and Patty and children, thank you for sharing stories with us through the years. Your father and grandfather has completed his earthly adventures to finally meet HIS Jesus face to face. May you find comfort, peace and a laugh or two as you remember him in the days ahead. God be with you all. Lee and Betty Sue Bryant, Amherst, VA

Dearest Family,
Mom ( Annie Mae) and Simon had a very special relationship. After he moved back to Lynchburg he would call her about once a week to have prayer together. She often talked about the precious times they shared. It meant a lot to her to be connected again with her cousin.
We pray that during this time you will find comfort in all the stories you hear about him.
I’m sure he heard....”Well done, my faithful servant.”
