Jane Campbell Tamburr

Jane Campbell Tamburr, 79, passed away on January 17, 2024 at Runk and Pratt at Liberty Ridge in Lynchburg. She was predeceased by her parents, Merrick Irwin Campbell and Marion Lathrop Campbell and her husband of 33 years, Karl Michael Tamburr. She is survived by her sister, Ann Campbell Wright (Charles), nephews Charles M. Wright (Anne) and Andrew L. Wright, grand niece Mary Campbell Wright and special friends Susan and Dale Butler, Denise O’Brien, Jan Kincaid, Christine Billings and her oldest and dearest friend, Carolyn Penn Blaylock.

Jane was a 1962 honor graduate of Granby High School in Norfolk, VA where she excelled academically. She graduated from Mary Washington College, now the University of Mary Washington, with a B.A. in English 1966 and received a M.A. in English from the University of Virginia in 1971. While pursuing a Ph.D. in English at the University, she worked as a graduate teaching and research assistant and also taught composition and literature to first and second year undergraduate students. She taught English at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk and then at Seven Hills Academy in Lynchburg following her marriage to Karl, an English professor at Sweet Briar College in Amherst,VA. She also worked for Lynchburg Magazine, writing human interest stories and advertising copy and served as an administrative assistant at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts in Amherst.

An avid animal lover, Jane volunteered in the cattery at Almost Home Pet Adoption Center in Lovingston, VA and gave generously to animal welfare and wildlife organizations. She was an excellent bridge player and always looked forward to weekly matches and duplicate competition. A highlight of many summers was traveling to England with Karl when he served as administrator of the Virginia Program at Oxford, a summer study abroad opportunity for college students. Jane enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, discussing politics and literature, watching old movies and relaxing with her beloved cats.

Memorial contributions in honor of Jane may be made to Almost Home Pet Adoption Center, 29 Stagebridge Road, Lovingston, VA 22949. Graveside services will be private at a later date.
