

Jewell Watts Massie, 82, of Lynchburg passed away Monday, January 5, 2015, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late James Edward Massie, Sr. Born December 7, 1932, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late John A. Watts, Sr. and the late Lelia Wright Watts.
Jewell was a retired recreation leader for the City of Lynchburg, and she was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, Jewell was preceded in death by two brothers, John A. Watts, Jr. and Carroll E. Watts; and one granddaughter, Brittney Massie.
Jewell is survived by her two children, Darlene Carter and James E. Massie, Jr. (Lynn); ten grandchildren, Stacy Hanks, Jewell Hancock (Kent), Tammy Garbee (Chris), Susan Arthur (Robert), Tommy Hammock (Tara), Terry Palmer (Michael), Jody Massie, Peyton Massie and Shannon Owens (Jimmy); sixteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
A funeral service will be conducted, 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 8, 2015, at Gethsemane Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlton Duck officiating. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends, 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2015, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Memorial contributions may be made to either Gethsemane Baptist Church or the American Diabetes Association.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the NICU staff at Lynchburg General Hospital.
