Bear you on the breath of dawn -
Make you to shine like the sun-
and hold you in the palm of His hand."
Excerpt Psalm 91
Adapted by Michael Joncas
Born April 21, 1931, Joan Slough Adams Nowlin, our songbird, departed this life to fly into the arms of her savior Jesus Christ on Monday, October 29, 2012 joining a multitude of her family and friends waiting to lovingly receive her. These include her parents, Percy G. and Lottie Yates Slough, her sister and husband, Jean A. and Frank Nichols, and her two husbands, Henry Thornton Adams and John Wood Nowlin.
Devoted to her family she leaves five loving children all of whom she adored, they include Daniel T. Adams, Sr., David R. Adams, Dennis L. Adams, Laura A. Ballowe, and Beth L. Adams; eight grandchildren, Wendy A. Hedrick (Dale), Daniel T. Adams, Jr. (Samantha), Ashleigh A. Taylor (Jacob), Brian C. Adams (Michelle), Michael J. Adams, Courtney E. Adams, Ryan M. Ballowe, and Logan A. Ballowe and six great grandchildren, Savanna Branch, Emily Branch, Daniel T. Adams, III, Dana Adams, Brianna B. Taylor and Jillian A. Taylor. Also surviving are special nieces, Theresa A. Troiano (Bob) and Sarah N. Hogue (Ron); special daughters-in-law whose ties still remain, Yukie Adams, Deborah F. Keeling and Lynne L. Adams. Being the epitome of motherhood she led a life of sacrifice for her children always putting them first in thought and deed. The only one that came before family was her Lord Jesus Christ whom she loved and trusted and to this end spent many years as a member of her beloved College Hill Baptist Church where she served selflessly as a Sunday School teacher, a mentor to many youth and choir member with an amazing vocal talent that could thrill and inspire and touch the heart. Her working years included many years of office service at Kern's Bakery, Houston Personnel, Lynchburg Engraving and Commercial Union Insurance Company. Upon retiring from Commercial Union Insurance Company as an executive secretary in the loss prevention department, Mrs. Nowlin began her own business, The Typing Center, where she prepared resumes, manuscripts, term papers and other documents until her full retirement several years later to better enjoy her family and bless us all with her big, beautiful, warm smile.
Believing that living flowers are the loveliest, please consider memorial contributions to College Hill Baptist Church Music Ministry instead. Special thanks to the wonderful caring staff at Runk and Pratt, Forest for their dedicated and kindhearted care of our Mom. We entrusted her to their care and we are thankful to all who so diligently, lovingly and patiently tended to her every need especially in her final moments. God Bless you all.
As she desired, a graveside service will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Andrew Grose officiating. Visitation will take place at that time.
Our Mom has left life as we know it for one where there is no pain and suffering - only joy, peace, love and the Glory of God filling every moment of every day. Philippians 3:14 says, "I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."
Mom has truly won the prize. Rest, O blessed Mother, for your children, grandchildren and your great-grandchildren are all still loving and remembering you until we meet again.
Whitten Park Avenue Chapel is serving the family.
