Born in Lynchburg on March 10, 1981, he was the son of Joy Jones Thacher and the late Philip Michael Pantana.
Joe will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, deep faith, and unwavering devotion to his country and his family. He proudly served in the U.S. Army National Guard, including a tour in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom at Tallil Air Force Base. His service reflected his strong sense of duty, courage, and commitment to something greater than himself, qualities that continued to define his life long after his time in uniform.
Joe had a natural talent for working with his hands and was known for being able to fix just about anything. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, using his skills not only to solve problems, but to patiently teach and uplift others along the way.
While Joe’s accomplishments were many, his greatest joy and proudest role was that of a husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife, Jessica, and his beloved son, Jonas, whom he absolutely adored. Joe cherished every moment spent with them, whether celebrating holidays, enjoying quiet evenings, hiking in the mountains, or simply being together. His love for his family was steady, strong, and evident in all that he did.
He also found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, camping at Petits Gap, sitting around a campfire with loved ones, and sharing laughter over a game of bowling. These moments, filled with warmth and connection, reflected the heart of the man he was.
In addition to his mother, wife, and son, he is survived by his three brothers, Philip Pantana and his wife Patricia, Andrew Pantana and his wife Kacie, and John Mark Pantana, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
Though his time here was far too short, Joe’s legacy of service, love, and faith will continue to live on in the lives of those he touched. His family takes comfort in knowing he is at peace, and that his life was one of deep purpose and meaning.
The Pantana family will receive guests during a reception held on Saturday, April 11, 2026 from 3 to 5 pm at All People’s Church, located at 727 Old Graves Mill Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502.
