Obituary of John "Murph" Cleveland Arthur
24 NOV 2020 John Cleveland “Murph” Arthur Johnny “Murph” Arthur, 61, of Rustburg passed away at home Monday morning November 23rd following an extended illness. He was the middle son of the late Samuel A. and Gladiese Carrico Arthur. Murph worked for many years in his family’s business – Arthur’s Grocery. He later earned notoriety and recognition as a popular and well-respected butcher and meat cutter in the Lynchburg area. He was an avid outdoorsman with an enthusiastic passion for hunting and hunting dogs. He was a member of several hunt clubs across Central Virginia. Murph also enjoyed swinging a golf club – particularly in his younger days. He was a huge fan of NASCAR and country music. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his grandparents John and Agnes Blankenship Arthur and Cleve and Mary Carrico. He is survived by brothers, Ted, of Little River, SC and Keith of Lynchburg along with nephew, Tyler Arthur of New York City. He also leaves to cherish his memory, devoted life partner, Loretta Coleman Griffin, of Rustburg and special friend, Heather Bratton of Lynchburg. Murph had many loyal friends, particularly his hunting buddies, who will miss his good-natured humor and jovial spirit. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 3PM on Thursday December 3rd at the historic Arthur Family Cemetery located at 171 Little Lane in Evington, Virginia. This will be an outdoor service. Please dress accordingly – hunting attire is more than appropriate. Face masks and social distancing are encouraged.
