

died Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Lynchburg
General Hospital. He was the husband of
Lynda Yeatts Slocum.
John was born in Lewiston, Maine, the son
of the late John Albert Slocum, Sr. and the
late Jennie Olmsted Slocum. In addition to
his parents, he was preceded in death by
one son, John Andrew “Andy” Slocum and
one sister, Betty Slocum.
He served as a photographer with the U.S.
Army Air Force in the South Pacific during
World War II. He graduated from Virginia
Tech in 1948 and became active in the
Slocum Chemical Co., Inc. (now Slocum
Adhesives) serving as its’ President and
Treasurer. Upon retirement he served as
Chairman of the Summer Timothy Program,
a Christian Day Camp for children living in the
College Hill area, a program now a part of
Churches for Urban Ministry. He served for
8 years as temporary superintendent of the
Presbyterian Cemetery, and at his death, was
a member of its’ Board of Trustees and Secretary.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian
Church, serving as an Elder, a member of B.P.O.E.
#321 Elks Lodge, American Chemical Society,
The Lynchburg Rotary Club, Oakwood Country Club
and a part time consultant with SCORE.
In addition to his wife, he is survived a daughter,
Susan S. Miles, her husband, Scott and his
granddaughter, Monica, all of Richmond.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m.,
Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Westminster
Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that a memorial
contribution be made to the Summer Timothy Program,
c/o Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1022 Floyd St., Lynchburg, VA 24501.
