

John Byrd Viar III, age 32 of Bedford, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2022 after a courageous two year battle against a very rare form of cancer (malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors). During his battle he endured 43 radiation treatments, 8 rounds of chemotherapy, and 3 surgical procedures.
John was born on May 19, 1990 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He is the son of John Byrd Viar, Jr. and Cathy Leftwich Viar. He attended Jefferson Forest High School, graduating in 2008. John’s love for travel carried him to many places including Hawaii, Sanibel Island, Iceland, Grand Cayman Island, New York City, Niagara Falls, and North Myrtle Beach every summer. He enjoyed games of all kinds, specifically playing video games with friends around the world, and he took great pride in beating his sister in Monopoly Deal.
John liked to sample various beers, especially at his favorite local spot, Apocalypse Ale Works. He was also known for his adventurous taste for trying all sorts of exotic international food.
He is survived by his parents, John Byrd Viar, Jr. and Cathy Leftwich Viar; his sister, Lacey Viar Kluttz and husband Patrick of Mechanicsville, Virginia; his brothers Bill Viar and wife Crystal of Concord, North Carolina and Ted Viar and wife Robin of Waxhaw, North Carolina; his nieces and nephews, Reid Viar, Katy Viar, Caden Viar, Flynn Viar, Connor Kluttz, and Emmie Kluttz; his caregiver and aunt, Anne White; and his adoring cat, Helios. John was a loving son, brother and uncle and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
