Kenneth Martin Gogel, a man of integrity, honor, and dedication, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 18, 2024, in Lynchburg at the age of 98. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Rita Rubinstein Gogel, and leaves behind a legacy of love and strength.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 13, 1925, Kenneth was the son of the late Samuel Abraham Gogel and Celia Krull Gogel. He served his country with pride and distinction during World War II as a member of the US Army's 90th Infantry Division in the 3rd Army. His service was a testament to his courage and commitment to his country.
After the war, Kenneth pursued a career in textile sales, spanning over 40 years in New York. His work ethic and passion for his trade were evident to all who knew him, and he was respected by colleagues and clients alike.
Kenneth was a devoted member of the Agudath Sholom Synagogue in Lynchburg, where his faith played a central role in his life. He found comfort and community within the congregation, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was also very proud of the 17 years he volunteered with the Lynchburg General Hospital Auxiliary.
Kenneth is survived by his two children, Dr. Jeff Gogel (Marian) of Forest and Ellen Podolski of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Jon Podolski, Jillian Gogel, and Gilbrith Gogel; and a dear friend, Lila Rosenthal. His memory will be cherished by his family and friends, and his legacy will live on in the lives of those he touched.
A funeral service will be held at the Agudath Sholom Synagogue on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., with Rabbi Harley Karz-Wagman officiating. Interment will follow in the Beth Joseph Agudath Sholom Cemetery, where Kenneth will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Rita.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Macular Degeneration Association, a cause that was close to Kenneth's heart. Donations can be made online at www.macularhope.org.
Whitten Timberlake Chapel is honored to serve the Gogel family during this difficult time.
