

She was born in Washington, D.C., a daughter of the late Eugene and Leah Christian.
As a child of a Navy pharmacist, she traveled around the world. She graduated from Bladensburg High School in Maryland. She received her RN nursing degree from American University in Washington, DC in 1947. As a nurse she provided extraordinary care and compassion. As a preacher’s wife, she demonstrated constant support for her husband and his ministry. Leah used her musical talents through playing the piano and singing in the choir. She exhibited the fruit of the Spirit and was always full of love, joy, peace, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. She was always praising God and would often say “God is so Good!”
In addition to her husband of 69 years, Herman A. Dowdy, she was preceded in death by her brother, Eugene “Chris” Christian, Jr.
Survivors include her three children, Donna Faber of Greer, SC, Daniel Dowdy of Lynchburg, VA, and Deborah Brown of Andrews, NC, as well as seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Lula Compton of Orange, VA.
Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to Gospel Baptist Church at 1300 Turner Road, Richmond, VA. 23225.
Family and friends will celebrate her life at 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at Gospel Baptist Church. The family will receive friends during a reception immediately following the service at the Dowdy Fellowship Center. Burial will take place at 3:00 pm on Wednesday at the Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, Virginia.
