She was born September 26, 1920 in Lynchburg, Va. to Massie Odell Viar and Clara Barton Viar. She was the oldest of six children and became “Little Momma” to her five siblings at the age of 12 when her father died. She helped her mother care for her sisters, Edith and Ellene, and her brothers, Massie, R.C.,and Jimmie.
Katherine was known by all for her radiant, ever-ready smile which reflected her warm, loving nature. There was also an ever-present sparkle in her eyes which reflected her joy in life and her irrepressible sense of humor. Her small stature didn’t deter her from tackling any challenge and her tiny hands were always busy, hard at work.
Taking after her mother, Katherine’s greatest love and devotion were for her family, who returned that love and were devoted to her. She will be missed beyond measure by her children, daughter, Diane Elmore Patterson and her husband, Charles (Pat); son, Danny Lee Elmore and his wife, Delma (Her fond nickname for her mother-in-law was “Miss Kitty”). Also mourning Katherine’s death are her beloved grandchildren, Brant lee Elmore and wife, Jamie, and Leighann Barton Elmore.
Katherine had four siblings remaining to grieve her death as well. They are listed above. Her sister, Edith, preceded her in death. Other survivors include cherished great grandsons, Logan and Benjamin. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Marion (Massie) Viar, Janice (R.C.) Viar, and Nadine Elmore Short. Katherine had numerous nieces and nephews, and shared a special relationship with one, Barbara Richardson, who called her “Aunt Kitty”. Extended family and many friends also remain.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the many staff members at Manassas health and Rehabilitation who so lovingly and tenderly cared for Katherine during her time there.
