Michael Edward Neighbors, 72, of Lynchburg, is rejoicing in the arms of his Savior, having departed this world following a valiant battle with lung cancer, surrounded by those he loved dearly, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. He was the son of the late Albert Neighbors, Sr. and Molly Shields Neighbors.
Born June 20, 1954, Michael was tough as nails—strong-willed, stubborn, and a fighter until the very end. Beneath that toughness was a man who loved his family fiercely. Being a husband, dad, and Papa was among his greatest joys, and his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. His hugs were unforgettable—the kind that made you feel loved and safe. To his family, he was a protector, provider, and someone they could always count on.
Michael was a true outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. His passion took him across North America in search of the next hunt, fishing trip, and adventure. He loved the woods, took great pride in his collection of guns and knives, and believed in always being prepared. He also loved college basketball and football and proudly cheered for his University of Virginia Cavaliers.
Above all, Michael loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His faith was a deep and important part of who he was. He was fiercely loyal to his family and friends. His family finds comfort in knowing he is now home with the Lord, free from every earthly burden and rejoicing with his Savior. He will be remembered for his strength, his stories and strong opinions, his unforgettable hugs, and most of all, the fierce love he had for the people in his life.
Michael was preceded in passing by his parents; his loving wife of 52 years, Donna Faye Neighbors; and several of his siblings.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children Christy Davis and husband David, Katrina Morris and her husband Scott, Colby Compton and her husband Denver; his grandchildren Sydney Engel and her husband Isaiah, Gabriel Morris, Abigail Morris, Avery Morris, Bryn Compton, and Blakely Compton; his great-grandson Dawson Engel; his siblings Jimmy Neighbors and his wife BJ, JoAnn Austin and husband Buster, and Elsie Harvey; along with many extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 11, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, followed by a Celebration of Life and Faith Service at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Jamie Adams. A graveside service will follow at Neighbors-Austin Family Cemetery. Friends are invited to the family’s home afterward for a time of fellowship.
