

Muriel Carleton Zimmerman Casey, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2025. A devoted educator, counselor, alumnae leader, and cherished member of the Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and Randolph College communities, she leaves behind a community profoundly shaped by her care and compassion, her devotion, grace, humor, and wisdom.
Born in New York City, July 16, 1932, to the late Lonnie and Ruth Zimmerman, Muriel moved to Lynchburg, Virginia to attend Randolph-Macon Woman’s College (R-MWC), an experience that would shape the course of her life and the life of the College itself.
After earning her teaching certificate, she embarked on a meaningful career in education as a classroom teacher and counselor. Later as assistant headmistress at Seven Hills School in Lynchburg and raising three rambunctious boys, she earned her M.Ed. from the University of Virginia.
Muriel’s community involvement included the Kappa Delta Sorority, Trinity Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, the Lynchburg Mental Health Association, the Woman’s Club of Lynchburg, the Ragged Robin Garden Club, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education in Washington D.C., the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the American Association of University Women, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
In 1972, Muriel became R-MWC’s sixth Alumnae Director. Over the next 30 years, she served five College presidents and 11 Alumnae Association presidents, guided countless aspiring students, and fostered a community of more than 13,000 alumnae. When she retired in 2003, the Muriel Zimmerman Casey Alumnae House was named in her honor, a lasting tribute to her leadership and spirit.
Following retirement, Muriel volunteered countless hours serving as a mentor and guide to the College alumnae and alumni office staff. She was awarded the R-MWC Alumnae Achievement Award in 2016.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, she treasured her family deeply. Muriel is proceeded in death by her husband, William Mallan Casey, Jr. She is survived by her three sons; Carleton A. Casey (Andrée) of Houma, LA, William W. Casey (Art Schlumpf) of Evington, VA, David D. Casey (Ann) of Rock Hill, SC. Five grandchildren; Carleton A. Casey, Jr. (Emilée), John W. Casey (Sarah), Joseph M. Casey, David D. Casey, Jr., and Alexandra Lizotte (Kyle). Six great-grandchildren; William and Matthew Casey and Maryellen, Jeanne-Claire, John, and Bransford Casey.
A funeral service will take place on Saturday, December 13, 2025, 11:00 am at Trinity Episcopal Church, 104 Walnut Hallow Road, Lynchburg, VA. with interment at Trinity Episcopal Cemetery. A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall.
