Paul George DeSaegher of Lynchburg, loving husband, father, grandpa as well as a friend to many walked into his Savior’s embrace on March 10, 2018.

Paul is survived by his high school sweetheart & wife of 54 years, Jani, his three daughters Jill Rufus, Jana Rakes, Jennifer DeSaegher & their spouses, eight grandchildren, his three siblings, John, Jim & Carol, and numerous other nieces, nephews and in- laws who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents John & Tess DeSaegher.

Paul’s childhood & young adult years were spent in Los Angeles, CA. He attended Westmont University and received his Master’s Degree from Talbot Theological Seminary. In 1971 he and his young family, came to Lynchburg. Over the years, Paul expanded into entrepreneurship and operated several businesses. With his boundless energy, Paul found great joy in waterskiing, keeping a beautiful yard and making his pool a great place for his grandchildren to enjoy cookouts. He loved his rental tenants and took time to connect with everyone he met.

His life was a demonstration of Philippians 1:20 "…that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain."

A celebration of his life will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2018 in the Pate Chapel at Thomas Road Baptist Church. Family members will be receiving guests beginning at 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to one of the three missions organizations that were nearest to Paul’s heart: Navigators c/o Laurie Owl- UC Riverside, P.O Box 6079, Albert Lea, MN 56007; NICS c/o Joe Hale 3790 Goodman Rd. E., Southaven, MS 38672; World Help Humanitarian Aid, c/o Vernon Brewer- PO Box 501, Forest, VA 24551.

I am flooded with fond memories of many good times share with Paul & Jani and especially the delightful 3 daughters they brought into this world and into my life as my dearest friends. Paul was teaching us the principles of entrepreneurship before we even knew how to spell it, much less understood it or thought it was something we would want to emulate. He was generous in all things. His smile. His laughter. His jokes. His businesses. His life.
I am so thankful my life was made better by his life. May he rest in peace and comfort.

Sweet memories of times spent with Paul & Jani. Remembering our overnight adventure to The Peaks for Valentine’ dinner and time together. They made each other shine. When together they were “double the pleasure.” I will always treasure our friendship. Their 3 lovely daughters are a tribute to their parents love and dedication. Prayers for the family.

We can’t believe that Paul is with Jesus now. It seems like only yesterday we were renting that apartment on 108 Hunterdale Drive and calling Paul to come help us fix something. He was always there when we needed him. We are saddened that we didn’t get to say goodbye in this lifetime, but we look forward to seeing him again! We love you Jani and know that we are praying for you and your family during this time. <3

We have precious memories of the many years we spent together at Heritage High, Faith Baptist High, and Liberty University creating special musical celebrations as well as life long family friendships which actually began many years before at Bob Jones University. We will always cherish our dear friend Paul, Jani and daughters. We rejoice with you that our friendship does not end in this life. We send all our love and prayers.

the Greatest memories I have of uncle Paul always had to do with having a good time!!! Whether it was going up to putt putt to play and hang out or going to the lake to ride the tube for 1,000 times;))), I knew we were going to have a fabulous time! Uncle Paul was always so giving and kind to me. I’m thankful for his generous spirit and his contagious fun loving outlook in life!

I always knew him as Uncle Paul and I loved him as a surrogate dad during my college years. Having grown up with my parents, he knew me from the moment I was born and always loved me well. During my years at Liberty he was my counselor, my employer, my shoulder to cry on, my free meal, my adventure buddy, my cheerleader and my friend. And I truly needed that support during those years. He will always hold a special place in my heart and I cannot imagine how hard this would be if I did not have the confidence that I would see him again in eternity. Goodbye for now dear Uncle Paul.
