
Phyllis Oppleman Gay, 90, of Lynchburg, died peacefully on September 16, 2012 at Candle Light Cove in Easton, MD. Phyllis was born on September 10, 1922, the daughter of the late William D. and Bertha Sachs Oppleman.
Mrs. Gay was a graduate of E. C. Glass High School and Lynchburg College. She went on to be a very dedicated teacher. She was a substitute and home bound teacher, as well as instrumental in helping found the Florence Crittenton School – they were always “one of her girls” from the minute they stepped through the doors. Phyllis was on several boards in Lynchburg including James River Day School, Seven Hills School, the YWCA, the United Way and the Florence Crittenton Home to name a few. She was active as a Girl Scout troop leader for 18 years and with the Cub Scouts for 7 years.
She married the love of her life, the late Samuel R. Gay, Jr. and they lived together in Lynchburg, Virginia.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Samuel R. Gay, III; sister Charlotte O. Lovenstein and brother Dan Oppleman.
Phyllis or “Fee” as friends and family knew her, is survived by her granddaughter Leigh Ann Gay Schaefer and her husband Ed and a great grandson Edward Charles Schaefer, Jr. all of Claiborne, Maryland.
