Born on May 29, 1949 Robert was known for his hard-working nature. He served with the Army National Guard for 27 years achieving the rank of Major, serving in several leadership roles at the battalion and division levels. Along with his part-time service in the military, he worked as a draftsman at local structural steel shops before working independently for much of his career. Those close to him recall how he loved to watch his NASCAR races and would root for anyone sporting a Ford badge on their car. He was able to attend races through the years with his brother Tom Kirkwood, who preceded him in death, and his cousin Bill Agee. In other down time, Robert was a big cruise lover, enjoying them with the love of his life and family over the years. He was always able to make new friends and truly never knew a stranger. Robert was the youngest of six children and was always the baby of the family. A devout Christian man, Robert was firm in his belief in Christ. He will truly be missed.
Those left to cherish Robert’s memory include his devoted and loving wife Diane Wood Kirkwood; his children Steven Kirkwood and his wife Christin Driscoll, and M. Scott Kirkwood and his wife Kelly; his three grandchildren Ashe, Isabel and Ty Kirkwood; and his sisters Janice Carter, Julia Thomas, Betty Mitchell, and Barbara Kirkwood.
A celebration of Robert’s life will take place on Friday, November 21, 2025 at 11am at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Pastor Randy Krantz officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Those in attendance are also invited to share in fellowship with the family after the service at a reception at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
