

Born September 5, 1920, Prince Edward County, VA, he was the last remaining son of the late Samuel Daniel Duncan and Lelia Florence Cason Duncan.
A graduate from Hampton Sydney College, Roy retired from Southland Life Insurance as a Staff Manager.
Roy served our country as Captain in the U.S. Marines during WWII in the South Pacific campaign. He commanded installation/operation of air-defense (AAA) batteries on several islands. On Tinian Island, he was charged with ground security for the Enola Gay (B-29) prior to their Top Secret mission on Hiroshima, 8/6/45.
Roy’s life inspired many people. He demonstrated what it meant to love fiercely and sincerely. His relationship with his wife was pure, sweet and steadfast. This love and his faith in God permeated his whole life. His level-headedness and sense of humor made him a reliable source of comfort and council. And he believed in a strong work ethic, integrity and respect for all lives.
Roy is survived by his loving wife for 74 years, Eliza Oertel Duncan; by his children: Linda Duncan Hays, her husband Bill; Roy Wallace Duncan, Jr.; Michael Herman Duncan, his wife Linda; Kelly Duncan Good, her husband Christopher; by three grandchildren: Jennifer Hays Samudre, her husband Subodh; Sarah Hays; Michael Daniel Duncan, his wife Ellie; and by numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 9 siblings: George Duncan, Bessie Kernodle, Bernice Fitch, Herman Duncan, Mildred Creasy, Lillian Stone, Mary Creasy, Tulane Duncan, and an infant sister.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Pastor Brian Ferrell officiating. Interment will follow at 3 pm at Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery in Farmville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service starting at 10 am.
