Sherwood Wayne Ferrell, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, passed away on February 5, 2024, at the age of 84 in Rustburg, Virginia. He was born on March 23, 1939, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to Basil L. Ferrell and Hazel D. Ferrell.
Wayne's life was filled with passion for various activities. He had a love for reading, gardening, sports, fishing, and hunting. The sports pages of the newspaper held a special place in his heart, reflecting his deep interest in athletic pursuits. Throughout his life, he actively contributed to the community as a Rec League basketball coach, Little League football coach, and Dixie League youth baseball coach. His commitment extended to serving as an officer on the Rustburg Athletic Boosters, leaving a lasting impact on the local sports community.
Even in his high school days, Wayne excelled as a baseball and basketball player, with his remarkable statue and height making him stand out above the crowd. His warmth and affection were evident in the strong hugs and hearty slaps on the back that he generously shared, particularly with his cherished grandchildren.
Wayne was renowned for his Brunswick stew, a recipe shared with his oldest son Steve, which delighted all at many family, fundraising, and community gatherings. He found joy in the soothing melodies of bluegrass and often expressed his love for music through playing the guitar.
A man of deep faith, Wayne found solace in reading his Bible and lived his life guided by his strong beliefs. He celebrated 63 years of marriage with his devoted wife, Betty Trent Ferrell. Together, they raised two loving sons, Steve Ferrell (Tara) and Mark Ferrell (Kathryn). His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Landon Ferrell (Anna), Tristan Ferrell, Sarah Ferrell, and Cooper.
Wayne is also survived by his brother, Larry Ferrell (Marlin), and his sisters, Carolyn Bosiger (EP), Rebecca Coates (Melvin), and Sue Francis (Butch). Their memories will forever hold the essence of a man who touched the lives of many with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love.
A memorial service to celebrate Sherwood Wayne Ferrell's life will be held on Monday, February 12, 2024, at 4 pm at the Rustburg United Methodist Church, 664 Village Highway, Rustburg, Virginia. The service will be officiated by Matt Laskey. Prior to the service, a visitation will take place from 3 pm to 4 pm. The family is being assisted by Whitten Timberlake Chapel in coordinating these arrangements. Wayne's legacy lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his memory will be cherished for years to come.
