Thelma Jamison Landis, 75, of Lynchburg went home to be with the Lord, September 25, 2012. She was born in Covington, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Warner C. Jamison, Sr. and Virginia Dickson Jamison. She is also preceded in death by two brothers, Warner C. Jamison, Jr. and James L. Jamison.
She met her husband, Edward L. Landis, Sr., when they were students at Covington High School and they graduated together in 1954. Thelma worked during high school and after graduation at Perkey’s Florist of Covington as a bookkeeper and floral assistant. In 1955 the high school sweethearts were married and began their life together in the military.
Thelma was devoted to her husband and family and dedicated the first 24 years of their married life to living in Germany, Turkey, Texas, Missouri, South Carolina, New Jersey, and Virginia as a wife and mother in the United States Army. She had to raise her children on her own at times because some of her husband’s tours of duty were in countries where it would not be secure for military families to live. One of these tours of duty was in 1967 when her husband was stationed in Vietnam for a year during the Vietnam War.
In 1971 she and Mr. Landis moved to Lynchburg with their family because Mr. Landis was assigned to serve as an Army recruiter in the city before retiring from the military. Thelma and her family joined Jordan Baptist Church of Lynchburg in 1972 and she and her husband have been members there for 40 years.
Thelma was passionate about the Lord, the importance of family, learning and travel and shared these gifts with Edward L. Landis, Sr. her devoted husband of over 57 years and with their three children and spouses and the grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Edward Landis, Sr.; daughter, Robbin Landis Dawson and husband Keith Dawson of Lynchburg; son, Edward Landis, Jr. and wife Susan Landis of Lynchburg; and son, Mark Landis and wife Stacy Landis of Appomattox; granddaughter, Heather Land and husband Justin Land of Newport News; grandson, Joshua Landis of Lynchburg and fiance’e Brittany Spencer of Stuarts Draft; grandson, Brennan Landis of Lynchburg; and granddaughter, Emily Kerns of Lynchburg. She is also survived by her brother Buford Jamison, Sr. of Port Orange, Florida; sister, Doris Croxton of Warsaw, Virginia; sister-in-law, Doris Jamison, brother-in-law, Leroy Landis and beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. She leaves with all who knew her the testimony of her faith and the legacy of a life well lived and well loved.
The family will hold visitation Friday, September 28th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Jordan Baptist Church on Parkwood Avenue in Lynchburg. The funeral service will be held at Jordan Baptist Church on Saturday, September 29th at 11:00 a.m. conducted by Dr. Melvin Campbell. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
Those wishing to make contributions in lieu of flowers are asked to consider donations to the building fund of Jordan Baptist Church and Centra Hospice of Lynchburg.
