William Levin Dean III

William Levin “Bill” Dean III was born December 18,1942 in Cambridge, MD. He went home to be with Jesus July 23, 2026. Bill was a son of the late William Levin Dean, Jr. and Annie Mae Doughty Dean. He was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Bill is survived by his wife, Tina, his son William Levin “Billy” Dean IV and his wife Meg; his grandchildren William Levin “Billy” Dean V, Lydia Gentry, Gillian Dean, Bella Dean, Katie Gentry; a sister Cynthia Prahl and her husband Wilmer; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved second son, Todd Michael Dean, who passed away October 21, 2022.

Bill played basketball and participated in track and field in high school. He graduated in 1960 and joined the army soon after, where he served honorably in the Army Signal Corps from 1960 until 1963, during which time, he was stationed in Korea.

Bill had a distinguished career in the Central Intelligence Agency lasting 30 years. During that time, he was stationed in various locations overseas and in America. He met Tina, his wife of nearly 60 years, while stationed in Okinawa. She was there at the time with her family due to her father also working for the CIA.

Bill loved to fish and hunt from the time he was a boy. While a young man living in Alexandria, VA, Bill and a few of his friends founded The National Capitol Bass Club. They organized bass fishing tournaments throughout Virginia and Maryland. He enjoyed taxidermy and made beautiful fishing rods and fishing lures.

Bill and Tina loved animals, all animals. After retirement, they bought a farm in Farmville, where they happily lived with many dogs and cats, horses, a donkey, turkeys, ducks and chickens—all pets, and each one with its own name. Bill spent many hours improving their farm. He built a workshop onto the house and did many renovations. He built a multi-function shed, two lean-to’s, made a tack room in the horse barn for Tina, dug a beautiful pond with his much-loved Kubota tractor, maintained the bridle paths throughout the woods on the farm for Tina to ride her horses, and planted many fields with various crops for the wildlife. He also planted hundreds of different varieties of trees, an orchard, and a large garden. Bill was the first person in Cumberland County to successfully achieve a stewardship forest on his land.

Bill gave many volunteer hours to Little League Baseball in Alexandria, VA. He coached and did field maintenance for years. Bill spent many hours maintaining the grounds of the church he and his family attended in North Carolina. He and Tina headed up Meals on Wheels for Thomas Road Baptist Church for years. Over the years he gave rides to church activities to people who were unable to drive themselves. Bill did various jobs over the years for the HOA in his neighborhood.

The family will be holding a memorial service at 2:00 pm on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Bill’s ashes will be laid to rest in the Virginia Veteran’s Cemetery at Amelia at a later date.
