Obituary of William Lee Hensley
William Lee Hensley, 66, of Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at his residence. He was the husband of Wilma Brooks Hensley. Born May 25, 1948 in Big Island, VA, he was the son of the late Norvell D. and Mary Patterson Hensley and was also preceded in death by his sister, Corretta H. Allen. Bill was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, where he served a tour in Vietnam. He retired from Appalachian Power Company with thirty-seven years of service. He graduated from the Lynchburg General Hospital Cardiac Technician Course, where he taught parts of the class and became certified as a Cardiac Emergency Technician and also served as a volunteer with the Monelison Rescue Squad for a number of years. In September of 1979, Bill received an award for valor for his rescue efforts at the derailment sight of the Southern Crescent in Nelson County. In December of 1981, he made his first solo flight in a C150 and became a licensed pilot. In December of 2010, Bill graduated from Central Virginia Community College with a degree in Administrative Support Technology. Bill will be remembered, mostly by his family and friends as very kind, always patient and very generous. He was a member of Langhorne Chapel Community Church. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hensley is survived by four stepchildren, Christie Bowles and husband Brent of Forest, Carrie McLamb and husband Josh of Raleigh, NC, Charles Brooks and wife Theresa of Lynchburg, and Steve Fisher and wife Penny of Evington; grandchildren, Zachary, Karlee, Amber, Amanda, Emily, Savanah, Jasmine, and Spencer; niece, Jackie Yimgling; nephews, David Taylor and John Taylor of Topeka, KA; two aunts, Bobbie Hensley and Nancy Hensley of Big Island; a host of cousins and a special friend, Kevin Jones. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 22, 2014 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Pastor Dwight Weaver, Jr. officiating. Interment with military honors by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Team will follow at Hunting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Big Island. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, August 21, 2014 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and other times at the residence. Special thanks to Theresa Turner, CNA Carolyn and all of the staff at Centra Hospice, Erika with Team Nurse; sister-in-law, Margaret Pentecost; special friend, Sandra Peters, and neighbor, Lincoln Barnes for all their help and support during recent months. Thanks also to Dr. Robert Heath and his staff at Carilion Cancer Center for their great care and compassion to the family.
