Born on October 27, 1943, in Dallas, Texas, Jan was a daughter of the late James Oscar Dennie and the late Emogene Hamilton Dennie of Irving, Texas.
Jan grew up in San Angelo, Texas. She was a Girl Scout member as a child and became her daughter’s troop leader as a Mama. At age 16, her first job was gift-wrapping for Warren Drug Store in San Angelo, Texas. She attended San Angelo’s Central High School and was a member of the Texanne’s Drill Team, the Boosters Club, and was elected as part of the Track Royalty her senior year. Jan became a Registered Nurse through a partnership program between El Centro Community College in Dallas, Texas, and Irving Community Hospital in Irving, Texas. Jan served her community as a Registered Nurse for 27 years. She spent the majority of those years at Irving Community Hospital working in the ER, and ICU/CCU, finishing her career as a day surgery nurse at the Las Colinas Medical Center, Las Colinas, Texas. She delighted in helping others.
Jan was a faithful member of the First Methodist Church of Mabank, Texas. She served in many church ministry programs throughout her life, guiding many souls to Jesus Christ.
Jan was blessed with 42 years of marriage to the love of her life, Jim, whom she lovingly called Sugar. Over those years, they enjoyed many adventures traveling, boating, fishing (especially off the all-night barge at Lake Grapevine), avidly rescuing dogs (in particular, Min Pins), and even riding 1976 XY 175 2-smoker dirt bikes!
Famous across several states for her chicken and dumplings, Jan was always eager to provide a meal to anyone in need or as a gift of gratitude. She was not only an exceptional cook, but also a talented seamstress making most of her children’s clothes until they went off to school. She loved watching westerns and game shows, gardening and mowing the lawn on her John Deere zero-turn mower, making arts and crafts, needlepoint, knitting, embroidery, and could spend hours going through the flea markets and antique shops. She also loved the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Rangers, and the Dallas Stars and no one jumped up and down and screamed louder at the TV than Jan during those games!
Jan was known by many names: Sis, Mom, Mama, Sugar, Aunt Jan, Granny Jan, Grammie, Great-Granny Jan, and Great-Grammie.
Jan is survived by her children Deborah Kay Joplin-Bejarano and her husband Juan Bejarano, of El Centro, CA; Steven Dale Joplin and his wife, Laura Joplin, of Arlington, Texas; Jimmie Holloway and his wife Suzan Holloway, of Phoenix, AZ; Kathy Jo Holloway-Medders of Hueytown, AL; Chuck Holloway and his wife Patty Holloway, of Bedford, Texas.
