Out of all the memories I have of  "Mom" my most cherished is how she took care of me during my first three years of college.  Every weekend I would come to Mesquite to  see my  girlfriend, Rosie (Her oldest daughter) I would also bring along my dirty laundry. Mom would meet me at the door with a hug and have a hot meal on the table. Then she would take my laundry, wash it and iron what needed to be ironed and stack it neatly  on the coffee table so I wouldn't forget it when I left. This was her weekly routine until my Senior year of college when I married her daughter.  What a blessing she was during those college days. 

As a child i lived very far away from the rest of my family. But every summer and Christmas I got to come stay at Nanny and Papa’s. Nanny alway went out of her way to make sure I felt happy and loved. She would teach me her newest hobby/craft she was working on. I still remember how to make those  beaded earrings she used to sell. She always made Hungarian goulash or weenies and beans when I came, so I wouldn’t get in trouble for not eating my food. Her love for all of us and her faith in god just poured out of her. I will miss her every day!

Nanny was a women who loved her Savior and her family.  She was a great grandma.  I will always remember the "Nanny and Me" week I spent with her every summer.  She was never afraid to get dirty and play with her grandkids.  She was also our savior after the "green pecan incident".  I think she is the only reason Papa didn't kill us after that.  Nanny & Papa both were giving people that would give the shirts off their back if they saw a need.  The depth of their generosity wasn't always well known because they didn't do it for the praise or glory, they did it because they saw a need and could meet it.  That was what was important to them.  I will miss you Nanny, but I know you are dancing in heaven with papa in the presence of Jesus and worshipping him, and because of that I am rejoicing also knowing I will see you again someday.

There are many reasons to celebrate my Nanny.  She loved each of her family members with hospitality, grace, and the warmest smiles and hugs.  There are so many lessons to learn from her.  She was faithfully married for 70 years, and she worked hard to take care of her children. She helped to build a home where she and Papa could retire, she worked in many areas of her church, and the list goes on.  I have the best childhood memories of time spent with her at the lake house.  But for me, the thing I celebrate  and the greatest lesson that she taught me was her lifelong commitment to Jesus.  She didn't love him word only or in certain seasons.  She loved him by serving him, reading his Word, being devoted to the church, and pointing everyone around her to Jesus.  We often talk about how the lake house was always a retreat for us. I think that was because Christ followers lived there. It was a special place because a woman who loved Jesus lived there and treated us as such.  What a privilege to be her granddaughter. I will miss her so much. 

I remember the first day I met her she gave me the biggest hug and said she loved me.  These were not just words.  She made me feel like I had always been part of the family.  Such a special lady.

Wow! What do you say when you had the best mom ever.  She encourage me in ever season of my life.  She was my go to person.
You never heard her talk bad about anyone and always look for the good in people.  She was always looking for a way to help. What an  inspiration as we watched her love and take care of my dad.  The thing that I loved most about mom was how she loved Jesus and loved to be in his word.  She taught us what an intimate walk with him looked like. I will see her again but I sure could use one of her big hugs right now.

The thing I will remember most is her warmth. The warming smile and the twinkle in her eye when she saw you. The joy she emanated when someone was around. The warmth of her presence, where nothing else mattered and she was just elated you were there to share that moment in time with her. That warmth is a gift I will always remember and I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Mother had a lot of special qualities, but her greatest and most evident was her ability to nurture and love.  I watched this in motion last year as she cared for my Dad, her husband of 71 years,  as he lay fading away.  I watched her cup his face in her hands and tell him tenderly how much she loved him.  I watched her care for his many physical needs, sad that he was no longer to able take care of them, but willingly wanting to be the one to meet those needs.  I saw her strength and devotion as she let him slowly go.  Mom loved him to the end...She taught me during that time how to say goodbye to the love of your life.  I just added it to the other many things she taught me through the years.  I will miss her so much, but will keep the memories until that day when we are reunited.

I want to tell you about the caring side of my mom for me:
     The part she took in the decision, when I had polio, to let doctors do surgery on me, not knowing the outcome of whether I would walk or not.
      The time the Lord led her to the backyard to save me from an accident that could have been serious.
      The comfort given when putting the car in reverse in the driveway, as a teenager.
       Many times I have cried to her for help and she was always there.
       She cared enough when Stephanie was born to travel to Germany so she could see and hold her.  She has loved on my grandchildren.
       But most of all she cared enough to share her faith in Jesus Christ, so her home now will be mine someday too.



Nanny loved people so well. As kids, she would roll with whatever we wanted to do. Bake muffins a 4:00 in the afternoon? Sure! Walk down to the doc and swim for the 4th time that day? Ok, let’s go! Color at the coffee table for hours? You got it! She never let us feel like we were in the way or a nuisance. She’d play whatever game, watch whatever movie, go along with whatever plan we made. She just wanted to be with us.  Her love for all of us shone so brightly.  She was such a great grandmother.

I don’t have just one memory because there are so many. I think the best part of her was how much true quality time she gave us when we were little and as adults. I don’t remember any specific advise she gave me because her actions and love was enough of an example for me. I loved how her face lit up when she would see us. Even though she told the same stories repeatedly, I would give anything to hear them one more time. Her and papa made a huge part of my childhood magical and as an adult I always knew they were praying and rooting for me. I will never stop missing either one of them and will carry them with me for as long as I live. Two of the greatest people to ever live were my Nanny and Papa and I’m glad they are together again. I love you so much my sweet Nanny. 

There’s not enough room on this page to share all the memories of Nanny. My favorite memory of Nanny was waking up early in the morning before anyone else was up at Aunt Rosies or wherever we were and Nanny sitting at the table reading her Bible. Her faith in God and her commitment to run the race to the end was my favorite memory. She was literally the most beautiful person I’ve ever met. Her memory will stay with me the rest of my life. I can’t wait to see her and Papa again some day. Love you Nanny.
