In the words of Donald “Hoss” A. Haverly……I was born November 1, 1934, which just happened to be All Saints Day. My mother always said I was everything except one. I guess in some cases she was right. (Moms are always right). I grew up in Derby, CT and graduated Derby High School, Class of 1953. It was at this school I met my bride, Dorothy; we dated for 2 years and married on December 4, 1954. I was in the Army when we married. I was on leave from first 8 week Basic, taken at Ft. Dix, NJ. I entered the service September of that year. Second eight week was taken at Fort Smith, AR, where I was trained on 105 Howitzer. I was sent to Dachau, Germany in February of 1955 and assigned to the 287th Field Artillery Btn., 155 Howitzer. My wife joined me in April of that year, and we had some good times seeing Europe at the expense of Uncle Sam. (It was a good deal at the time). Our first son was born in Munich, Germany at the second field hospital. We came back state side August of 1956 and I then did 3 years of active reserve duty with a 105 Howitzer group out of New Haven, CT, with a total of 5 years military time. I ended up finding a job at Farrell Birmingham Foundry as a maintenance apprentice. Did about 2 years, with them and then in 1958 Kimberly Clark opened a plant in New Milford, CT, where I applied for work and got a job there. New Milford was 50 miles from where I then lived. Needless to say we moved. I stayed with Kimberly Clark till 1995 when I retired. Tried to live on the East Coast, cost of living was too high. We moved to Texas in 1999, (ME, MAMA, A SACK OF POTATOES AND TWO DOGS), and have been there ever since. Joined St. Peters Lutheran Church and been there since.
Donald “Hoss” A. Haverly was born to parents William B. Haverly and Mary Bell Peet and entered into eternal rest on March 19, 2016 at the age of 81. Donald was known as “Hoss” to all his family and friends. Donald loved making people laugh. He was the definition of love and joy. Donald was a very patriotic man, who loved his country. He loved attending church and started a Pin Ministry, “Prayer Works”. Donald also served as a volunteer fireman for Northville Volunteer Fire Department. He owned his own business; Hoss’s Clipper House, sharpening clipper blades. Donald was a counselor for AA members. He was a very loving and caring man who will be missed tremendously by those knew who and loved him.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; William Jr., James and Earnest, and daughter-in-law Darcy Haverly.
He is survived by his loving wife Dorothy Haverly, son Kenneth Haverly and wife Sue of New Preston, CT, son Robert Haverly and fiancé Meredith Williams of Gun Barrel City, son John Haverly and wife Peggy of Eustace, daughter Deborah Jock and husband Mike of Eustace, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 2 on the way, 1 great-great grandchild with 1 on the way, other loving family members and many more friends.
