He enlisted in the US Army on March 8, 1965 at the age of 18. He took the enlistment oath that reads: I do solemnly swear or affirm, that I will support and defend The Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign or domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the uniform code of military justice, so help me God. Dad was then sent to Vietnam where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. On February 17, 1968 my dad was honorably discharged at the age of 21.
Then East met West. James William East and Shirley Janice West met and fell in love. Then on August 9, 1968 he took a second very important oath. An oath to love, cherish, in sickness and in health, for richer of poorer, until death do us part before God and family to my mom. And for 54 years he did Faithfully keep until mom passed away on January 6, 2025. He was a very hard working, loving and caring husband, father to two awnry boys, grandpa to 15 grandkids, Great grandpa to 25, Great-Great grandpa to one grandson and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He was brother to an older sister Sue Stanley, who passed April 2021; a younger brother Richard East, who passed November 9, 2025; a younger sister Sandra Richards and his youngest sister Sharon Johnston.
To my dad his family was everything. His love for his family was only second to his love of God.
We love you and will miss you Dad.
