Joan passed away on March 2, 2024, in Malakoff, Texas. She was born on September 28, 1958, in Dallas, Texas to J. Olin Dukes and Ruby Lucina Colston Dukes.
Joan, or Joanie as she was fondly referred to by her father and childhood friends, was a graduate of Malakoff High School and she loved her Tigers! She enjoyed her days outdoors. She was known for her green thumb and appreciated the beauty brought forth by working in the yard tending to her flowers and plants. She enjoyed the peace and quiet that came while casting a line when fishing. Recording home videos when her children were young and finding that perfect picture to take became a beloved hobby. You could count on Joan to be in the stands at the events of her family, capturing the moments not just of her own children and grandchildren, but also their friends. She was their unofficial photographer for every sport, rodeo, or FFA event she could attend- and she tried to make them all! It broke her heart when any child didn’t have a person in the stands, so she made sure to take pictures of every kid and let them know she was rooting for them. In this way she was everyone’s Nana. She enjoyed puzzles and had eagle eyes when it came to spotting the exact piece needed and where it went. Joan loved spending time with all her family. Her favorite days were those spent cooking and feeding her family. Whether it was fried chicken, spaghetti and french fries, or carrying on the tradition of her own mother’s chicken and dumplings with homemade rolls, Joan loved meals with her family. After the table was cleared and the food put away, Joan would get a damp towel to wipe off the table so the cards or dominoes could come out. Many memories were made around her table. Much laughter and smack talk came from the family as they played hands of “Skip-Bo”, “Uno”, count or train dominoes, “chicken foot”, or Joan’s personal favorite- “42”. She was the champ. If you wanted to win, you’d make sure to be her partner. Joan cherished every moment spent with her family. She embraced the role of wife, mother, Nana, and EE. Joan will be dearly missed, but so many of her wonderful traits and characteristics will live on in the hearts and memories of all that knew and loved her.
