From March 31, 1948, just before Joe Lee's 13th birthday, when my parents, brother, Roy Jr., and I moved next to the home where she lived with her grandparents and brother, David, I have had wonderful memories of her. It seems, as soon as we moved in, Joe Lee was an almost daily visitor. Although she came to see Mother, as she shared the concerns and joys of being a teenager; learned to crotchet; and read letters from her dad, who was in the military; I enjoyed her visits, envied her beautiful, naturally-curly red hair, and often tried to imitate her mannerisms, such as wiping the sand off of a new pair of shoes on the inside of my skirt, as she did. We moved from Mabank, shortly before her marriage, but often saw her after moves back to the area. I last spoke with Joe Lee, on December 11, 2008, to tell her of Mother's passing. I feel sure that Joe Lee and Mother are visiting, once again, in Heaven. With great sadness and deepest sympathy, Mary (Hyde) Vanderslice

Jo lee,
Thank you for being such a wonderful, sweet person. You and Wayne put up with a lot with the hord of teenagers who invaded your home, and gave you a hard time. But you never complained, just loved us all unconditionally. Love you, thank you for being a wonderful part of my childhood.

Joe Lee took me under her wing not long after I began working with her at Athens Commission many years ago and I always knew she was there for me. Loved hearing her stories and just being her friend. Kim and Kasey, you were blessed to have such a special sweet lady for your mom and she loved you with all of her heart. May God give you comfort and peace in your memories of her.
