Born on October 18, 1947, to Roy and Vada Carpenter, Mary lived each day with quiet faith, unwavering kindness, and a servant’s heart. She believed everyone deserved compassion, encouragement, and a warm smile, and she had the rare ability to make every person she met feel welcomed, valued, and loved.
Mary devoted much of her life to education, where she became far more than a teacher. She was a mentor, encourager, and trusted friend whose influence reached generations of students and fellow educators. Long after leaving her classroom, people continued to remember her gentle spirit, her joyful smile, and the kindness she extended to everyone around her.
To know Mary was to know genuine goodness. Friends remembered her as sweet, joyful, compassionate, and full of grace. She loved her years of Mary Kay business and sisterhood and all the fun times of trying new products together and finding beauty in life’s everyday moments. Whether sharing a conversation with a neighbor, encouraging a friend, or simply offering a smile, Mary had a gift for making ordinary moments feel special.
Nothing, however, brought her greater happiness than her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and adoring “Nana.” Her greatest joy in recent years was her six treasured great-grandchildren—Presley, Peyton, Paxton, Emma, Maverick, and Maximus. Their laughter, hugs, milestones, and sweet smiles filled her heart and brought her immeasurable happiness. They truly were the joy of her soul.
Mary is lovingly survived by her brothers, Dave Carpenter and Tom Carpenter; her sister, Gloria Quick; her cherished daughter, Melissa Scarborough, and son, Joseph David Scarborough. She was a proud grandmother to Ashley Kihoto, Logan Anderson, Madi Anderson, Justin Grams, Jordan Grams, Jasmine Scarborough, and Joey Scarborough, and a loving great-grandmother to Presley, Peyton, Paxton, Emma, Maverick, and Maximus. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, former students, coworkers, neighbors, and lifelong friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Dean Scarborough, Jr.; her parents, Roy and Vada Carpenter; her brothers John, Mike, Paul, and Preston Carpenter; and her sister, Pat Webber.
The countless tributes shared following Mary’s passing all told the same story. Friends from every season of her life remembered her radiant smile, her gentle heart, her steadfast faith, and the genuine kindness she extended to everyone she met. She never sought recognition or attention, yet she quietly changed lives simply by loving people well.
Mary’s legacy is not measured by the years she lived, but by the lives she touched. She leaves behind a family who adored her, generations of students who were blessed by her guidance, friends who became family, and a community made brighter because she was part of it.
Though our hearts grieve her absence, we rejoice in the promise that she is now restored, reunited with loved ones who have gone before her, and embraced by the Savior she faithfully trusted throughout her life.
“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:23
