Texie Lee Griffin of Corsicana, Texas finally made it home on April 9, 2024! She had waited over 94 years for this day! Texie was born to William E. Lee Garrett and Fredora "Dora" Tully Garrett on August 14, 1929, in Deport, Texas. Texie was the youngest of William and Dora's children.
All of William and Dora's children, 11 in all, were born in Arkansas except for Texie. She was the only child born in Texas. That is why William and Dora named her Texie. Many thought this was a nickname given to her by her family. but Texie is her given birth name.
Texie is preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings, Jack Garrett, Icie Garrett Baker, J. L. Garrett Phillips, Tom Garrett, J. E. "B" Garrett, R. L. "Spooky" Garrett. She also had 4 siblings that passed away as very young children. Twins, R. T. and R. A. Garrett, William Jr., and Iva Agnes Clementine Garrett. The siblings that reached adulthood all passed away in order of their birth, oldest to youngest, Texie being the last one.
She is survived by her four sons, Tom Duke and wife Brenda of Hot Springs, Arkansas, John Duke and wife Marilyn of Mabank, Texas, David Duke of Mabank, Texas, Ralph Duke and wife Laurie of Midlothian, Texas. Texie was known as Ma-Maw and is also survived by her 9 grandchildren: Deanna Tompkins and husband Joel, Tommy Duke and wife Tanya, Tracie Dobbs and husband Clayton, Chris Duke and wife Erin, Michael Duke and wife Amber, Hannah James and husband Brian, Caleb Duke and wife Cierra, Rachel Duke, and Timothy Duke, as well as her 10 great-grandchildren: Dewey, Madison, Easton, Skyler, Alec, Damien, Willow, Parker, Sammy, and Finley, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Texie was not afraid to share her faith and trust in God. For as long as most can remember, she lived a life that honored God and was not ashamed to say she was His child. She always had a Bible close by. Even when she went into the hospital for the last time, her Bible was on the table next to her. In every church she was a member, she was very active in Women's Ministry, Sunday School, and anything else where she could serve. She also loved to sing! She could be heard at church singing a special on Sunday or leading the congregation in song. She could often be heard in the kitchen humming old hymns.
She worked as a childcare provider at her home and day care centers for many years. She loved working in the nursery with the babies and toddlers. She has truly blessed many children in the years she took care of them. She was also known as "Miss Texie" by her coworkers, parents, and children she worked with for so many years.
Texie loved to crochet and knit. She was always making something for someone! She was also not afraid to get her hands dirty! For much of her life, Texie lived and worked on a farm. She enjoyed fishing gardening, raising chickens, ducks, guineas, and just about any other farm animal that came along. She was truly the "country girl" and proud of it.
Most that knew and loved her are truly better people because of Texie. She touched so many lives in her time on Earth. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She had a servant's heart that was willing to do whatever needed to be done. Her family and friends will miss her dearly but look forward to seeing her again someday!
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Twilight Nursing and Rehabilitation in Corsicana for the care they provided Texie over the past few years, as well as the doctors, nurses, and staff of Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana for taking care of her in her final hours.
