Betty Lou (Winkler) Guffey, 83 passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior on November 22, 2013. Born January 11, 1930 in Freeport, she was the daughter of the late John and Esther (Armstrong) Winkler. She was married on July 14, 1956 to Walter R. Guffey, Sr. in Freeport.
A graduate of Jacksonville School of the Deaf, she was an active member of the St. Paul Lutheran Deaf Church in Rockford as a music leader until her health declined.
A busy homemaker for her married life, Betty was employed with Colorama Photography and GC Electronics for a short while. She was also a member of the Elks Club, Eagles Club, and an active member of the Illinois Association for the Deaf.
Betty is known for her love of all types of crafting for family and friends. She has made many quilts, afghans, blankets, ceramic and plastic canvas items that will be dearly cherished.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Walter Guffey, Sr.; children, Lewis W. (Jody P.) Guffey, Kathy E. (Jamie) Petrie, and Wally R. (Rhonda K.) Guffey, Jr.; daughter in law, Jodi Miles-Summeril; seven grandchildren, John Miles, Nicholas (Krystal) Guffey, K. Louise (Karl) Seager, Maggie (Tim Hurkmans) Phillips, Nicole Howard, Jamie Petrie, Jr., and Eddie Petrie; seven great grandchildren; two sisters in law, Jean Winkler and Viola Lamp; and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded into eternity by her parents, son, Jerry Guffey; grandchild, Nicole Guffey; two brothers, Louis M., and John C. Winkler; two sisters, Evelyn Goodwin and Dorothy Bierce; mother and father in law Walter (Audrey) Guffey.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park. Visitation 1 p.m. to time of service. Interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Online condolences may be submitted at sunsetfhmemgardens.com
