Doris Ann DeVries

Doris Ann DeVries, age 83, of Rockford, Illinois passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2023. Doris was born in Charles City, Iowa on April 1, 1939 to Keith and Gertrude Henry. Doris graduated from Rockford East High School. Doris married the love of her life, Harold (Butch) DeVries on June 14, 1957. Doris was a devoted and loving mother, always putting her daughters and grandchildren before herself. Doris and Harold traveled frequently for Harold's work, she enjoyed sight-seeing on those trips as well as the many family vacations they took around the United States. She loved her pet dachshund, Tammy and cat, Oreo. Doris and Butch square danced in the Merry Mixers Square Dance Club for several years. She was a fan of Willie Nelson. She was a Jenny Lind volunteer at Swedish American Hospital and was an election poll worker. She was a member of the Red Hat Society. Doris loved flowers and enjoyed gardening, mowing the lawn and shopping. She was an avid collector of Precious Moments and Beanie Babies. Doris was employed as a cashier for Hilander Foods on S. Alpine Road and then as a medical claims processor for Blackhawk Individual Practice Association where she retired in 2001. After retirement, Doris truly loved the winters spent in Naples, Florida, soaking in the sunshine, warm weather and time spent with the many good friends she made.
Doris is survived by her husband, Harold DeVries; daughters, Vicki Middleton and Linda Childers; grandchildren, Samantha Middleton, Nate (Sarah) Childers, and Zac (Amanda) Childers; step great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Audrey; brother in-laws, Martin Neff and Roger DeVries; sister in-law, Donna DeVries; nieces and nephews, Jerry, Susan, Pam, Troy, Michael, and Sandy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Keith and Gertrude Henry; sister, Shirley Neff, brother in-law, Dennis DeVries.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023 from 1:00pm until the time of Memorial Service at 2:00 pm at Sunset Funeral Home (8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park, IL 61115). Inurnment to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Cherry Valley United Methodist Church or the National Kidney Foundation.
