Eugene A. “Gene” Myers, 77, of Machesney Park, IL, passed away peacefully, Tuesday morning, February 7, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 12, 1945 in Springfield, IL, the son of Mardell Otto. Gene graduated from high school, went on to join the United States Army from 1965-1968 including serving in Vietnam for 13 months and Germany for 18 months. After returning from the Army, he married his sweetheart, Penny Lemke on January 6, 1969 and they spent 54 loving years together. He was a machinist for Woodward, retiring in 2008. Gene was a member of the Roscoe VFW. He enjoyed shooting pool, playing basketball and working on cars in his younger years. Gene was a hardworking man who adored his family.
He is loved and missed by his wife, Penny; children, Sheri, Sheila, Steven (Nichole) and Shelly (Curt); 14 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandson; mother-in-law, Bette; sister-in-law and special brother-in-law and friend, Pat and Conrad; sister-in-law, Jane; and brother-in-laws, Luverne, Mike and Joe. He was preceded in death by his mother; brother-in-law, Danny and step-brother-in-law, Stan.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to OSF Hospice especially Pastor Darren and his daughter, Sheila and grandson, Cody for their loving and compassionate care of Gene.
A visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Friday, February 10, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd, Machesney Park, IL 61115 with a funeral service to begin at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Darren Loeppky officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
