George Ella "Joyce" Sims

Joyce Sims, 84 of Rockford departed this earthly life on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at Amberwood Care Centre. She was born April 14, 1930 to Edgar and Sauvella Highsmith. She lived in Rockford for 70 years after moving from Arkansas. Joyce married Elbert Sims on July 27, 1956 in Rockford.

Joyce attended school in Arkansas. She was employed at the Municipal Sanitarium and Rockton Children’s Home as a cook for many years. Joyce was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where she served on numerous auxiliaries and as a Deaconess.

She leaves to cherish her memories, including son, Elbert Sims Jr.; daughter, Gloria (Robert) Sturgis; seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Frederick (Margaret) and Orlee Highsmith; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, loving husband, two sisters, two brothers, and a granddaughter.

The family wishes to thank Joyce’s niece, Christine Reedy; nephew, Derrick Highsmith; and all of the staff at Amberwood Care Centre for their loving care.

Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, August 15, at Bethel Baptist Church, 724 Harrison Avenue, Rockford. Pastor Kerry Newburn will be officiating. Visitation, 9 a.m. to time of service. Interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Online condolences may be submitted at sunsetfhmemgardens.com.
