Girolama “Mimma” Orlando, age 75, of Rockford, Illinois passed away surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at OSF St. Anthony Hospital. Mimma was born on November 19, 1947 in Capaci, Sicily-Italy to Paolo Macaluso and Francesca Giambona. At the age of 17 Mimma married Peter Orlando on November 21st, 1964 in Porticello, Sicily. Together Mimma and Peter moved to Rockford,
Illinois where they spent their lives together. She spent her life as a mother but also worked at Nelson Knitting, Bishop Cafe where she loved to serve pies, Napoli Pizza and Pasta where she cooked for the Loves Park and Rockford communities. They were longtime members of St. Anthony
of Padua Catholic Church in Rockford, Illinois. Mimma enjoyed cooking, shopping, watching the Cubs and gardening but truly loved spending time with her family, friends and spoiling her
grandchildren, who she was very proud of and loved tremendously. She was a rock to her family especially to her brothers, sisters, and daughter. Mimma will be missed dearly by everyone who knew her.
Mimma is survived by her daughter, Josephine (Michael) Prestegaard; grandchildren, Brianna and Andrew Prestegaard; siblings, Tony Macaluso, Phillip (Mary) Borgia, Antonina (the late Antonio “Dino”) Laudicina, Maria (Brad) Larson; sister in law, Gina Macaluso; nieces and nephews, Paul, Kristina, Frank (Sarah), Robert, Francesca, Rachel, Ryan, Gianni, and Nico. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Orlando; son, Joseph Orlando; mother, Francesca Borgia; fathers, Paolo Macaluso and Giovanni Borgia;
brother, Paul Macaluso.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023 from 8am until the time of the funeral mass at 10am at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church located at 1010 Ferguson St, Rockford, IL 6110 . Entombment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens (Chapel of Love). The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the nurses and staff at OSF St. Anthony, especially Dr. Disanti.
