Jan A. Alton, 83, of Rockford, IL, passed away peacefully, Saturday morning, October 31, 2026 surrounded by her loving family at home. She was born January 6, 1943 in Effingham, IL, the daughter of Charles C. and Leona G. (Brooks) Rafferty. Jan graduated from East High School and went on to train as a nurse. She married her sweetheart, Richard A. Alton, on April 24, 1965 at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Rockford. Jan enjoyed reading and gardening. She adored all animals, and was known for taking care of the stray cats around the home. In her spare time, she could be found watching Court TV and crime dramas. Most of all, Jan will be remembered for being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Jan is loved and missed by her husband of 61 years, Richard; children, Todd (Debbie) Alton and Troy (Marmar) Alton; grandchildren, Abigail Alton and Arria Alton; brother Don (Nancy) Rafferty; sister-in-law, Kay Johnson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings.
A visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Friday, November 13, 2026 at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd, Machesney Park, IL 61115 with a celebration of life to begin at 2:00 p.m. Entombment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
