Jeanette Ann Lindenmier

Jeanette “Jan” Ann Lindenmier, age 84, of Loves Park, Illinois passed away on Monday, July 27, 2026. She was born September 1, 1941 in Rockford, Illinois to Ernest and Eloise (Alexander) Lenius. She married the love of her life, Kenneth Lindenmier, on July 19, 1961 and they spent 64 wonderful years together before he passed earlier this year.

From an early age, she found comfort, purpose, and joy in nature. After losing both her father before she knew him and her stepfather as a child, she developed a deep sense of responsibility and compassion that shaped her life’s work. She believed every child deserved to feel loved, valued, and connected to the natural world.

A pioneer in environmental education, she dedicated more than 60 years to inspiring children and adults alike. She began her career with Rockford School District 205 (1963–1976), where she developed the Atwood Outdoor Education Program for sixth-grade students and the Schoolyard Program, bringing hands-on environmental education directly into local schools. She continued her work with the Regional Office of Education (1976–1986), where she created the Double Eagle II Environmental Education Center, serving students across two counties while providing professional development for teachers.

In 1987, she joined the Rockford Park District, where she founded and led the Aldeen Environmental Education “Let’s Go See” Program. The program introduced preschool and elementary students, teachers, adults, and college students to the wonders of the natural world through hands-on discovery. She believed that understanding nature fostered respect for it, often saying that what we do not understand, we fear, and what we fear, we destroy.

Over her career, she introduced more than 150,000 students and thousands of adults to the beauty and importance of the environment. In 1988, she established the community’s annual Arbor Day/Earth Day celebration, bringing together local organizations to promote environmental stewardship while providing educational programs and distributing hundreds of trees to local families each year. Her travels around the world enriched her teaching, but her greatest joy was sharing those experiences with others and seeing the wonder of nature through the eyes of a child.

Her legacy lives on in the innovative environmental education programs she created, the generations of students and educators she inspired, and the enduring belief that people are an integral part of the natural world.

Jan is survived by her daughters, Deb McNally and Pam (Craig) Connell; granddaughter, Amanda McNally; grand-dogs, Keia and Cupcake; and great-grand-dog, Snickers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Lindenmier; parents, Ernest Lenius and Eloise (Harley) Baker; and sister, Diane Baker-Lockwood.

A memorial service will be held Friday, August 7 at 2:00pm at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N Alpine Rd, Machesney Park, IL 61115. Entombment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
