58 years old, of Loves Park, loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather, passed away suddenly January 14, 2019. He was born June 20, 1960 to Louis and Margaret Diegel in Chicago. Larry was a volunteer firefighter and Paramedic. Larry began working for the United States Postal Service in 1980, as a letter carrier. He used his passion and knowledge of fire science and medical procedure to advance to safety manager in Rockford IL. It was there that he met the love of his life, Peggy. Larry continued to use his knowledge and skills to advance his career with the USPS through various management and post master positions until retirement as the executive manager for the state of Indiana. He was presented with numerous merit and honorary awards throughout his career. But above all, his greatest time spent was being with his wife Peggy, family, and friends. He was always going out of his way to make others feel cared for and loved, that was Larry.
He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy; children, Kelli (Marion) Stanfel and Andrew (Betty) Harkin; his grandchildren Jeremy Harkin, Samantha Malone, Alexandria Hall, Julianna Harkin, Brittney Stanfel and Sydney Stanfel; his siblings Terry (Kathy) Diegel and Barbara (Gene) Craddock; his brother in law Randy Hamm; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is predeceased by his parents, Louis and Margaret Diegel.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, January 26 at Sunset Funeral Home 8800 N. Alpine Rd. Machesney Park. A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service.
