Lawrence R. Burg “Larry”, 81, of Rockford, Illinois passed away on April 22, 2021 due to COVID complications. He was born May 21, 1939 in Atchison, Kansas son of Roman & Nina (Candria) Burg. Entered the U.S. Air Force at 17 years old serving in the U.S., England, Germany, North Africa, and Vietnam. Once out of the military, he went to work as an Air Traffic Controller, in all serving the United States with over 44 years of service. He married Mary “Kathy” Sumner on May 15, 2004 and immediately became a member of a large family who gave him loving nicknames like My Larry, and Daddy-O.
Larry was a lifetime fan of University of Kansas Jayhawks, and Kansas City Chiefs (before they were cool). He was also a car lover/enthusiast, owning over 70 vehicles in his lifetime. He was a Formula 1, and NASCAR fan, attending races in the US and Internationally. Always a photographer at heart, he loved to show pictures and tell stories of his travels around the world.
Survivors include his wife; children, Rick (Kelly) Caudel of Rockford, Wayne (Kristin) Caudel of Cotati, CA, Dawn (Dean) Stronach of Stoughton, WI, Jeff (April) Sumner of Machesney Park, IL, Pam Sumner of Rockford, IL; grandchildren, Kyle (Rachel), Kaleb (Allyse Barckley), Kylie, Kaitlin, Kelsey, Lindsay Caudel; Heather, Nick Johnson; Alex, Jake Sumner, and Ryan (Darcy Kaderlik) Alberts; great grandchildren, Ashlyn, Lilah, and Aria; Brother-in-law, Jim(Earlene) Wilson, and three nieces.
He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Ruthie; sister, Lucy Wilson.
