“Neta” Norma Dean (Jones) Carter departed this life for a far better one in heaven on Monday, August 2, 2021, surrounded by family at home. Norma was born to Clarence (C.A.) Jones and Addie (Ainley) Jones on August 8, 1929, in Randolph County, Arkansas, the middle child of seven. She married Kermit Eugene Carter on April 1, 1949. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Machesney Park and taught Sunday School, missions, and Vacation Bible School there for more than 60 years. Norma had several jobs in her lifetime, including being a teacher for 2 years in a one-room school for grades 1-8, but her most important job was being the mother of Gail (Thomas) Miller of Roscoe, Illinois; Kenneth E. (Michelle) Carter, and Ruth J. Ours, both of Machesney Park, Illinois, all of whom survive her. She is the beloved grandmother of Thomas David (Kristel) Miller, Michael Joseph (Christina) Miller, Laura (Kevin) Perkins, and Amy Smith, and great-grandmother and Gaga to Riley, Ryan, Kaia, Dagan, Cole, Eiker, Harper, Hadley, Dax, and Crew. She is also survived by sister, Erma (Walter "Joe") Hampton of Arnold, Missouri; brother-in-law, Charles Homer (Kay) Carter of Supply, Arkansas; sisters-in-law, Peggy (Larry) West of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Sharon French of Doniphan, Missouri, and Anita Jones of Carthage, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeased by her husband and parents; brothers, Alden Jones, James Derl Jones, and Carroll Rae Jones; sisters, Geraldine Harris and Oldean Abshier; brothers-in-law, Carl Harris, Ewell Abshier, J.W. Carter, Elbert Ray, Lester Carter, William ("Buck") McConnaughey, Ed Hinklin, and Russell French; and sisters-in-law, Erma Jones, Mary Louise Jones, Reva Carter, Geraldine Ray, Georgia Carter, Vida Jean McConnaughey, and Gentle Lea Hinklin.
A visitation is scheduled for Norma from 5-7pm on August 5 at Sunset Funeral Home. Located at 8800 N. Alpine Rd. Machesney Park IL 61115. Funeral services will take place Friday August 6, at 1:30pm at First Baptist Church of Machesney Park located at 718 Harlem Rd, Machesney Park, IL 61115. A short visitation will take place at 1pm until the time of service. Burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
