Randy Eugene Cates, 65, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2024, after a long battle with COPD. Randy was born on March 18, 1959, in Rockford, IL, where he lived most of his life before moving to Tennessee in 2022 to be closer to his son, Zachary. Randy had a strong faith in the Lord, which grew even stronger in recent years. His commitment to his faith led him to be baptized just last year.
Randy was a machinist at Hamilton Sundstrand and a proud member of the UAW for more than 30 years. He also served his country, enlisting in the United States Army at the age of 17. Randy had a deep love for Halloween, his favorite holiday, and he often went all out to celebrate. A lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, he never missed a game. If there was one other thing Randy truly enjoyed, it was a good meal, and he made sure his final meal included two of his favorites: pancakes and biscuits and gravy.
Randy loved working on cars—or anything with a motor, really. His passion for fixing things carried throughout his life, from cars to guitars. His love for music was ever-present, often blasting Lynyrd Skynyrd or Van Halen for the neighborhood to hear. This passion lives on through his son, Zachary, who shares Randy’s love for music and guitars.
Randy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Paula Cates; his loving parents, Nancy Defendi and Lester Cates; and his sister, Sharon Twitty. He is survived and dearly missed by his son, Zachary Royce Cates; daughter-in-law, Maegan Cates; his siblings, Karen Hamilton and James Cates; his stepchildren, Michael Eviston and Jessica Smith; grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Visitation will be held on Friday, October 25th, 2024 from 1pm until the time of the Funeral Service at 2pm at Sunset Funeral Home (8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park, IL 61115). Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
